Re: Furthur 7/28/10 |
Well, I see it. Just compare him to any of the other figures on the stage - they all appear to be aware that this is a rock concert and they are playing in the band. Bob's whole demeanor is wrong and un-Boblike. Not the whole time, but for long moments, disconcertingly so.

Re: Furthur 7/28/10 |
I can offer, I think, a fresh and completely objective assessment, and consider this a nonDEAD post as well...I have to join those that say "I dunno what anyone is seeing" as I see his "hand in the air" addressing band members and fans as just the sort of thing Bob does these days...I saw him act like this with Ratdog yrs ago (I watched it with the sound off, on a lg screen, so know nothing about the sound, other than I don't like it...sorry, just judging him physically). Not playing, while singing, but still, moving, and not wiping his face that much...again, these are behaviors I've noted in him the last decade...maybe I've been looking for them as signs of what I don't like about him, but for what my meager two cents is worth, 1) I don't see much of a change, and 2) he seems engaged as he ever is...?
Very small sample size for me though, maybe five visuals in the past ten yrs of Bob, incl one live Ratdog and some youtube like this one...
I wouldn't be surprised about all the other stuff being true, though it's the usual paradox with him (smoking while eating right; exercising while doing coke; etc., etc., etc.).
EDIT: what is much more disturbing is how pathetically I spell and it is a credit to you all that you made any sense of this post! I think I have a bigger problem than Bob...oh...right, this is how I always post!
Damn...
And, RingleeO, having now seen ElPaso, I think you are right about there being some wrong with that one...so perhaps I gave him far too much benefit of the doubt for the SDStreet...

Re: Furthur 7/28/10 |
Hey, Tell, I think maybe Bob was just a little tired and cranky and wondering what the hell he was doing it all for. I think maybe he's been thinking that off and on for a while now.
And, boy, do I know how he feels.
(edited for stupid latenight grammatical idiocy - disclaimer: other idiocies may apply)

Re: Furthur 7/28/10 |
I shouldn't even be involved, as I really don't know what he looks like except what I read here, and it appears to concern veins and not smiling...besides, I am getting dangerously close to a DEAD related post, eh?
But, I may be walking the only line of not even thinking anything's wrong on this one tune; ie, he might even be having a good time with all that hand waving and deciding "why play?" since it's not like he stops playing and sits down...he still seems involved in the song to me, and he never smiles anyhow, right? I couldn't magnify it enough to see any veins though.

D. I'm not really seeing it either. Bob's perfectly aware of where he is - who is it who's signalling the changes? Yes. Bob. OK so he apparently zoned out on the words once but hell, I can give him eight years and I blank on my phone number sometimes. If I read tomorrow that he was found dead in his hotel room I'll have to eat my words (and I will) but right now I think an awful lot is being made out of very little. Time for the vultures to go home hungry.

Phil is signaling the changes when he steps up to the mic and talks into their ear monitors. Bobby used to lead the jam during the GD days, but now it's obviously Phil running the show.

Seriously, you're saying this based on what? Bob's just waving his finger in the air to see which way the wind is blowing is he? And he was the one leading the jams in the Grateful Dead was he? To repeat: you're saying this based on what?

Based on an interview Jerry gave.
Have you been to a Furthur show? I've been to 11 so far. I know what goes on onstage.

Reference for that interview if you will.
No, I have not been to a Furthur show; they don't come to my part of the planet. And just being in the audience a few times doesn't necessarily lend you insight into the onstage dynamic. You actually didn't answer my question. For the sake of argument, and only for the sake of argument, let's say you were right and Phil is bandleader. Now you'd have to assume, wouldn't you, that Bob would know this. So what's he doing? Directing traffic? Swatting flies? Waving to his bank manager?

Maybe he's trying to snatch the lyrics out of the air?

Re: Furthur 7/28/10 |
i have to agree with WT and rob, I don't really see anything particularly upsetting from this video. Bob is always a space cadet when it comes to words, and the 2' to 3:30 part you mentioned is essentially a cappella (sp?) anyway. Sure, he's having an off night, but at least from that video it didn't seem so bad. From what I hear, that was not at all the worst of it, though. I guess I'll have to wait and see if there's a video of the apparently abysmal el paso - i'll compare it to the version from the eighties when Otis his dog died. :(

Re: Furthur 7/28/10 |
Actually, I just struggled thru it again (har, again, no sound so I'd focus on the body language) and I'd actually say, unless DD and RingleeO are right about him NOT doing this usually (I haven't seem him live in yrs), he seems relatively engaged if you take the arm waving and stopping to sing with hands on instrument as the classic posture of many older stars that realize their playing isn't so vital anymore, and they sort of sing along, lead along the fans...? Really...I've seen him many times look so intense, he couldn't pause to look at bandmates, or maybe he was on something and had to concentrate hard, or whatever, but the bottom line for me is I don't see too much different from at least some prior looks at Bob playing in band...
Recall a while back everyone was saying how Bob didn't look happy playing and Phil did? This one seems just another manifestation of that, but with a little handwaving and such to almost make you think he was more engaged...?
Sorry, maybe just muddling matters...

None of you have looked at the El Paso video, right?
Sorry but while y'all have hundreds of shows on me from the earlier years, I on the other hand saw Bob Weir a couple of weeks ago, and this is *not* what was going on.
Let's just hope he's playing right now, and whatever it was, passed.

Re: Furthur 7/28/10 |
Did finally, and defn see what you mean on that, but still think there is just some "good old Bob, forgetful, oddball, intense looking, downright strange" behavior that is worse with age coming thru there...don't get me wrong, I think he's got abuse issues too.
But, as you say, you've seen him lately, so you can make this call, not me. I just have always thought he was odd, and when I saw him with Ratdog, he was somewhat like this; to the point I walked out...ignoring band members, talking not singing; forgeting lyrics; stopping songs...again, maybe I am just adding up a handful of "bad nights" to bash the poor guy, but I really think he should quit playing given what I last saw and paid for...but I think that about 75% of the geezer circuit, so I am a cranky old bastard that should STFU, I am sure many would say...
Right?
